Know What Anxiety is and How to Control It

Article by Jay Chase

Anxiety is a condition that effects many people all over the world. It is a very common disorder that people suffer from and is something that can go unrecognised and misdiagnised for many as it can sometimes be considered as a social taboo or something that is not really a problem as ii is just something that happens. This is a total misconception, anxiety is something that is experienced my millions. Anxiety is caused by the a release of adrenalin from the body when it is under stress. However, this release of adrenalin can be misunderstood by the mind when it is released in irrational situations and communicated to the brain as fear, learnt from life experiences.

Anxiety can be part of many disorders as the state and feeling of fear and nervousness transitions into such things as Generalised Anxiety Disorder (GAD), Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD), Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), Panic Disorders and Social Phobias. Anxiety is both physical and psychological based upon subjective, behavioural and cognitive processes. The most common symptoms of anxiety are listed below, it is important to realise that they are not usually all experienced by all as everyone is different and will suffer symptoms at different levels of severity:

- Nausea- Difficulty breathing- Sweating- Panic from fear- Irregular heart beat- Hypersensitivity- Shaking- Diarrhoea- Headache- Palpitations

It is best to approach our GP or even a therapist to confirm that what you experience is in fact anxiety as this will give you direction and focus to coping with it. There are certain criteria to meet to help find out if you do suffer from anxiety, but if you have suffered from some of the symptoms above you are probably experiencing the condition in some form. Anxiety can be managed in numerous way’s most commonly with individual, group or personal therapy and/or medication. It is compulsory and highly advised to seek medical advice from your GP if you choose to use medication to help alleviate anxiety symptoms.

Therapy is very effective in coping with anxiety and learning to control your life again. CBT (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy) and NLP (Neurolinguistic Programming) are very common types of therapy that have proven very successful as they find the trigger for your anxious feelings and give you techniques to cope with it on a daily basis by gradually dealing with any fears by confronting them slowly.

Anxiety is mostly a learned disorder, fortunately it is this fact that allows you to take control of your life again and your brain can relearn how to react to the situations you find difficult. There are many methods and techniques that can be used and have been used in such things as CBT and NLP therapies or in independent trials by individuals that didn’t want to let anxiety beat them any more. Start by researching anxiety and realising that it is not a condition that is ‘incurable’ and that it is what you make of it. If you believe that the anxiety will overcome you then it will, if you believe you can beat it then you can. It is all about how the brain associates what you perceive as negative to then be positive, it really is as simple as that.

However, this does not mean you will be fine overnight as you must remember you have probably felt like this for a while and it will take a while for your mind to truly believe that it is not in danger. This CAN be done though using gradual techniques and monitoring, so be confronting your problem and acknowledging that the problem does not have to be negative your anxiety can be curbed. Just by understanding anxiety is a huge step into coping with it and taking back the control over your life. Firstly, look at your lifestyle and write down the things you can change about it that would help you, but this does not mean avoid things that cause anxiety. It is so easy to just try and stay clear of this, but it does not do you any good in the long run. You do not learn that you will not be hurt, or laughed at or make mistakes in the situations you are scared of.

Try cutting out stimulants in your life: Caffeine, sugar, alcohol , drugs etc this will help with palpitations and panic attacks as your blood sugars will be kept more level etc, exercise, healthy eating and trying to maintain a regular sleeping pattern all sound like simple changes but can have a dramatic effect on your reactions. Maintain a diary of events, thoughts and feelings to monitor what is the trigger to your anxiety and then take a step back and write an action plan which consists of small, gradual steps that confront the things you find difficult but in manageable time lines and pieces that can retrain your psyche. Give yourself a realistic timeline that challenges you but that also does not throw you in at the deep end as you do not want to counteract what you are trying to do.

Research different techniques: Positive association, breathing techniques and relaxation techniques are all very positive and successful in this sort of scenario. Anxiety does not have to control you. It is that simple, Look at your life, look around you, look at what you and others can do and do it. You can stop that worry about what others think of you and begin to believe in yourself and your life.

Natural Anxiety Relief – How to cure anxiety and panic using three natural anxiety relief approaches

Article by Anna Walker

Natural anxiety relief is often being considered by people who suffer from anxiety or panic attacks, as an alternative to prescribed medication. In this article I will explain why this is a popular decision and the best natural anxiety relief available and how it should be used.

Anxiety attacks affect approximately 17% of the adult population worldwide, and the most common approach to treating it is with prescribed medication. These prescribed drugs are designed to alter the biochemistry of the brain, so changing the way the sufferer feels. However, it is a known fact that these anti-anxiety drugs have many side effects, including paranoia, an increase of suicidal feelings in the first few weeks, and long-term addiction.

For this reason, an increasing number of people are looking for natural anxiety relief as a way to control and ultimately cure their anxiety and panic attacks. There are three main area of natural anxiety treatment available:

The herbal method – This method relies upon natural products, however, it should be remembered that they still aim to affect the brains biochemistry. Some of the most effective herbal supplements for anxiety relief are:

Valerian – Natures own tranquilizer! For centuries, Valerian has been the herbalist’s favourite treatment for any type of nervous tension. Valerian has few unpleasant side effects, except for its horrible taste! It should not be taken with any other form of sedative.

Evening Primrose Oil – Originally a Native American herb it has a wide range of uses, including the traditional treatment of anxiety.

Passion Flower – Highly effective at relieving muscle tension and effects of severe anxiety. Can help to promote a good night’s sleep. Do not take if pregnant.

Actaea Rose – A Native American herb, used to good effect with panic.

St John’s Wort – Probably the most famous herb used to treat depression. It has also been found to be useful in treating anxiety, possibly because it is an effective muscle relaxant.

As with all medicine prescribed or herbal, the stated dose should not be exceeded.

Lifestyle Change – General lifestyle advice for treating anxiety is similar to that given for reducing stress.

Improve your diet – eat more fruit and vegetable and whole grains. Also, reduce caffeine and alcohol, as both are stimulants.

Be physically fit – Get more exercise.

These are all things we know we should be doing; however, going for a jog when you feel anxious can feel like the hardest thing in the world to do. From personal experience, possibly the most annoying piece of advice, I was ever given by my doctor!

Talking therapy – These methods attempt to alter the brains patterns, and biochemistry, through behaviour modification such as hypnosis, visualization, coaching and CBT.

The most successful natural method of curing anxiety and panic attacks is Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) based programmes that have been developed in the last few decades. The success rate of these treatments is approximately 95%. Either on a one-to-one basis with a therapist or by committing to self-help programme.

All of the three methods mentioned above have pros and cons, and all of them take commitment and patience. No magic cure that can get rid of anxiety exists. However, it is possible to cure anxiety using natural methods, as opposed to merely suppressing it with medication.

Overall, I feel that an approach combining all three natural anxiety reliefs would be the most successful and would help to initially manage anxiety and panic and then to completely cure anxiety.
